Chapter 13

An Altered Plan

In the end, it was Snow White who brought up the implications of the fight.

She waited for someone to mention it that night as Angel dressed the Seven Warriors’ wounds by smearing minced garlic on their bruises and holding an onion up to their face. No one did.

She woke up early the following morning and waited for the discussion as she helped Marzell prepare the morning breakfast of oatmeal. It was never mentioned.

Finally, by noon, she had decided they could not continue in silence. “We need more help than soldiers and troops.” She sat in a chair and glanced around the cottage before finally meeting Marzell’s gaze. “We have to send for the Veneno Conclave. Now.”

Marzell rubbed his eyes as Aldelbert led Oswald and Rupert in what he called his “Glory-Intensifying-Stretches.”

“You’re right,” Marzell admitted. “This mage seems like they might be more than we can protect you from. It is our failing.”

“No,” Snow White said. “This is no fault of your own. Faina has a castle full of ministers, servants, and soldiers—none of them were able to protect her, either.”

Marzell said nothing in return, and together they watched Aldelbert’s eccentric stretch routine.

“Now lean forward to bow in all humility and graciousness, then reach for the sky and grab the greatness waiting for you!” Aldelbert told Oswald and Rupert.

“This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” Oswald grumbled.

Wendal kicked him in the back of the knee. “Cease your complaining and thank My Lord for his graciousness, or I will take you out behind the cottage to end your pain.”

“It is helping,” Rupert said, sounding surprised as he stretched in the manner Aldelbert instructed.

“Of course. It’s all due to my fabulous healing,” Angel said.

“A bold claim,” Rupert said. “I still smell like garlic.”

“Your bruises are better, aren’t they?” Angel demanded.

Fritz stepped out of the shadows of the cottage, lingering by Snow White’s chair. “Snow White is correct. We need to send word to the Conclave now. I’ll go.”

Snow White tensed slightly. “What?”

“I know the fastest routes. And as a forester, I won’t draw the attention Aldelbert, Rupert, or even Gregori would.” Fritz nodded at the slumbering merchant draped across a basket of dried nuts.

“Wouldn’t Angel be our best bet?” Wendal folded his arms across his chest as he considered Fritz. “She has magic and has told us before she is certified by the Conclave. They would instantly believe her. If Fritz goes, he’ll have to have proof of some sort.”

Angel pulled on her jagged locks and sighed. “Sorry to ruin your plans, but I am the last person you should send to the Conclave. I’m not really…liked by the powers that be.”

“Won’t they listen to you on something this important?” Snow White asked.

Something hard momentarily settled on Angel’s face, and she seemed to look past Snow White, to something far and out of reach. “Hardly. I’ve gone to them before with news just as dire, and every time…” She shook her head and returned her gaze to Snow White with a false smile.
